Lesson 11 - Chapter 3: Multifunction Devices Flashcards
What is a multifunction device? (MFD)
A device that combines several functions like printer, scanner, copier, and fax machine
What does the scanner function do?
Makes digital copies of existing paper documents
What’s the most common variety of scanner?
flatbed scanner
How does a flatbed scanner work?
place photo or document face down on the glass (platen), close the lid, initiate the scan
What’s the glass used in the scanner process called?
the platen
How does a scanner capture the image?
it runs a bright light along the length of the platen 1 or more times and a sensor determines how light/dark each pixel is and assigns a numeric value to the pixel
(color scanners do the same for each color)
What’s a pixel?
a colored dot
Many scanners and multifunction devices will have this tray
automatic document feeder (ADF)
What’s an automatic document feeder (ADF)?
a tray that holds a multi-page document and feeds it into the scanner one page at a time (removes manual work)
What are the 4 primary variables when choosing a scanner?
- Pixels per inch/resolution it can record
- Color depth (number of bits used to describe each pixel color)
- Grayscale depth (number of bits used to describe each greyscale pixel)
- Scan speed (pages per minute it can scan)
What generic scanning utility does Windows come with?
Windows Fax & Scan utility (enables control over an attached scanner)
What is the OCR feature?
Optical character recognition (OCR) that turns a scanned document into text that you can manipulate with a word processing program
A scanner can use 1 of 2 driver types. What are they?
- TWAIN - Technology Without An Interesting Name, older
- Windows Image Acquisition (WIA) - preferred in Windows, modern
What does network scanning enable you to do?
scan a document and save the scanned image file anywhere like a centrally accessed network storage location (then share that saved location on LAN, cloud storage, or send to email)
What does SMB stand for?
Server Message Block
