Lesson 1: What is Science? Flashcards
1
Q
theory
A
- highly reliable scientific conclusions based on data, observations, and inferences, but are NOT testable or proven
2
Q
qualitative data
A
- descriptive data using your 5 senses (sight, hearing, touch, taste, smell)
3
Q
quantitative data
A
- numbers obtained by counting/measuring/calculating; using your brain
4
Q
data
A
- two main types
5
Q
control group
A
- exposed to the same conditions as the dependent variable, but not exposed to the independent variable
6
Q
dependent variable
A
- variable that is observed and changed in response to the independent variable
7
Q
independent variable
A
- the variable that is deliberately changed in an experiment
8
Q
controlled experiment
A
- an experiment in which all variables but one are kept unchanged, or controlled
9
Q
hypotheses
A
- a tentative scientific explanation that can be tested by further observation or by experimentation
10
Q
inference
A
- a logical interpretation based on what scientists already know
11
Q
observation
A
- the act of describing events or processes in a careful, orderly way
12
Q
Science is . . .
A
- the use of evidence to construct testable explanations and predictions of natural phenomena, as well as the knowledge generated through this PROCESS
13
Q
Scientific Method
A
- ask a scientific, investigatable question
- form a hypothesis
- plan, research, or experiment/test
- record data
- interpret results/data
- draw conclusion: proven or disproven
- communicate results
14
Q
scientific inquiry
A
- the process of asking meaningfull questions and looking for answers to those questions; the question must me one that can be investigated
