Lecture Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is selective permeability dependent on?
Size, charge, and concentration gradient
What is the difference between simple and facilitated diffusion?
Simple does not require protein, facilitated does.
What is osmosis
The movement of water across a selectively permeable membrane.
What is the term for water intoxication, and what is the problem with it?
Hyponatramia, not enough sodium
What is active transport?
Transport across the cell membrane that requires ATP
What is an example of primary active transport?
Sodium-potassium pump
What is a mechanism of secondary active transport?
Energy source from movement of another substance.
What is one of the functions of transport proteins?
Contribute to the electronegativity of the plasma membrane.
What is one of the functions of transmembrane receptor proteins?
Allow cells to respond to changes in their environments.
What is a ligand?
The substance a particular receptor is specified for.
What are the four types of cell junctions?
Tight junctions, desmosomes, hemidesmosomes, gap junctions
What type of cell junction connects epithelial tissue to underlying connective tissue?
Hemidesmosomes.
Where does DNA replication occur?
The nucleus
What are the two main cellular phases?
Interphase and the Mitotic phase
In which phase does DNA replication occur?
Interphase
