- maori believe when someone dies their spirit leaves their body and goes on a great journey

- whanau is brought back in to the world of the living

fortunate indeed is the person who knows the pain associated from losing love, for they were fortunate to have experienced and known true love

before death
ohaki = when a rangatira knew death was near they summoned people to their side and gave them an ohaki which is last instructions given to the people who are to lead next
whare taroro= when someone was close to dying they were shrouded in tapu (temporary shelter to ensure the tapu was contained)
- tuku wairua = release of the spirit, to ease the passage of the spirit into the afterlife
after death
tapu= blankets everyone associated with the person who died, karakia protects people associated with death
- preparing the body:
tapapaku = to squat down
kokowai
undertaker = chemical processes
mara preparations= cleaning, looking after the kids
tangihanga/takiaue = funeral
–> powhiri
karanga= first voice in the powhiri process, so they open the portal to the other realm
–> body placement

–> whaikorero and waiata
–> kirimate/whanau pani (mourner)
kirimate= those closed related to the deceased
whanau pani= family members who were heavily on that person eg: orphan or widow)

kawakawa = mourning wreath

= to bury
- celebration of the life of the deceased
- share stories/sing songs
- kirimate/ whanau pani can speak
- closing of coffin
- service = marae/church
nehu =urupu (burial ground/cemetery)
post burial
hakari = feast, welcome the whanau back to the world of the living
takai whare (trample the house)
- make sure there was some sort of karakia put over the house so everyone can return safely
hura kohatu = unveiling of the headstone
kawe mate= when someone is buried away from their tribal area we take home spiritually, take photo onto marae

to remove tapu
meaning of pohutakawa
- if the star is easy to see = very few deaths
- moving erratically= many deaths
