Lecture 9 - Stomach Disease (Part II) Flashcards
Helicobacter Pylori diseases?
Gastritis, Peptic ulcer disease, gastric cancer, gastric MALToma
H. Pylori action?
Invades protective barrier, exposes mucosa to acid, causing inflammation and difficulty healing - typically asymptomatic
Treatment of H. Pylori?
Triple therapy: omeprazole, clarithromycin and amoxycillin for 2 weeks
Other causes of peptic ulcer disease?
NSAIDs, Aspirin
Surgeries to historically treat ulcer disease?
Gastrectomy, Vagotomy, Pyloroplasty (cut pylorus and re-suture to relax pyloric sphincter
Intestinal Gastric adenocarcinoma?
well differentiated, cells arranged in tubular pattern
Diffuse Gastric adenocarcinoma?
Poorly differentiated, lack glandular formation, infiltrate gastric wall (linitis plastina)
H. Pylori leading to gastric cancer?
Widespread inflammation leads to destruction of parietal cells causing bacteria survival and build up leading to cancer
