Lecture 2 - Abdominal Wall and Peritoneum Flashcards
Central regions of the abdomen (sup to inf)
Epigastric, Umbilical, Pubic
Outer regions of the abdomen (sup to inf)
Hypochondrium, Flank, Groin (all L&R)
Layers of the abdominal wall?
Skin, Superficial fascia, Muscle, Transveralis Fascia, Parietal Peritoneum
3 Muscles of abdominal wall?
External and internal obliques, transversalis abdominis
Rectus Abdominus function?
Flex Trunk, Support/Compress Abdominal Wall
Rectus Abdominus nerve supply?
anterior rami of thoracic spinal nerves
External Oblique Aponeurosis?
from Xiphoid process to pubic synphysis (lower border forms inguinal ligament)
External Oblique Actions?
Flex trunk (both); turn to opposite side/bend trunk same side (single)
External Oblique nerve supply?
anterior rami of thoracic spinal nerves
External Oblique fibre direction?
Infero-medial
Internal Oblique action?
Flex trunk (both); turn and bend trunk to same side (single)
Internal Oblique nerve supply?
anterior rami of thoracic spinal nerves (& some L1)
Internal Oblique fibre direction?
supero-medial
Transversus Abdominus action?
support abdominal wall
Transversus Abdominus nerve supply?
Anterior rami of thoracic nerves (& some L1)
The Rectus Sheath?
Tendons of thoracic wall muscles; surround Rectus Abdominis in upper 3/4, anterior aspect only in lower 1/4 (inf. to arcuate line)
Purpose of arcuate line?
Allow thinner wall for inferior epigastric artery to pierce through
Arterial supply to thoracic wall muscles?
Superior (from internal thoracic) and inferior epigastric (from external iliac)
Thoracic Wall arteries pathway?
run underneath rectus abdominus within rectus sheath and anastomose
Venous drainage of thoracic wall muscles?
thoracoepigastric veins to axillary (up), superficial epigastric veins to femoral (down)
Cutaneous nerve supply?
anterior cutaneous branches of L1, as well as both anterior and lateral cutaneous branches of 7-12 intercostal nerves
Dermatome landmark?
Umbilical = T10
Visceral layer fold around?
Mesentery, anchors self to posterior body wall
Parietal Peritoneum Sensation and supply?
pain, touch, temerature & pressure; somatic nerves T7-L1, Phrenic nerve, obturator nerve
Visceral Peritoneum Sensation and Supply?
Sensitive to strech; ANS
Intra-peritoneal?
completely surrounded by visceral & suspended by mesentery
Retro-peritoneal?
between peritoneum and body wall
Lesser Sac Location?
Under liver, behind stomach and lesser omentum
Paracolic gutter location?
lateral to acsending/descending colons
Paracolic gutter function?
pathway for peritoneal fluid to travel around abdomen
Paracolic gutter right side importance?
larger, in contact w lesser sac
