Lecture 19 - The Vitamins Flashcards
fat soluble vitamins?
A, D, E, K
factors effecting bioavailability?
transit time, other foods, preparation of food, source of food (natural/synthetic), nutritional status
Majority of b vitamin function?
Energy production
Re-feeding syndrome?
Replenishing carbohydrates to starvation without thiamine repleneshment drives a greater thiamine deficiency
Wet beri beri?
Thiamine deficiency causes weakened heart rate, causing fluid to leak out of blood vessels due to lowered pressure causing pitting on skin when pressure is placed
Wernicke-encephalopathy?
Alcohol related brain damage (thiamine), language, walking and eye movement problems
Korsakoff syndrome?
amnesia, inability to learn, confabulation
Causes of folate deficiency?
low intake, reduced intestinal absorption, alcohol, antagonists, increased demand in pregnancy, anticonvulsant drugs
Folate deficiency diseases?
Megaloblastic anaemia, spinal bifida, risjk of cancer, heart disease and mental abnormalities
Folic acid in pregnancy?
800ug/day 4wk prior up to wk12 (5000ug/day w history)
Vitamin A source and function?
Animal products, retinyl esters turn into retinol (reproduction)
Beta-carotene source and function?
Plants, converted into retinal (vision)
3rd body chemical associated w vitamin A?
Retinoic acid - supports growth
Vitamin A in vision?
Forms rhodopsin, allows photoreceptor function, relates to cornea health
Vitamin A in cell differentiation?
Protein synthesis, maintains healthy cells in mucous membrane
