lecture 9 Flashcards
1
Q
primary tissues
A
- formed by primary growth
- increase in organ length
- herbaceous plants
- cells supplied by primary meristems (which are supplied by the SAM and RAM)
2
Q
secondary tissues
A
- formed by secondary growth
- increase in organ width
- “woody” plants
- cells supplied by secondary meristem (vascular cambium and cork cambium)
3
Q
what is cork?
A
specialized boundary tissue that is dead at maturity, air filled, and has suberized cell walls
4
Q
what is cork cambium?
A
lateral meristem
4
Q
what is suberin?
A
a waxy material located within the cell walls of cork cells (and Casparian strip of endodermal cells); forms a protective barrier that is impermeable to water
4
Q
what is phelloderm?
A
living parenchyma
5
Q
what is the function of the vascular cambium?
A
- makes all secondary vascular tissues
- generates secondary xylem to the inside (towards pith) and secondary phloem to the outside (towards periderm)
6
Q
what are the two types of initials in vascular cambium?
A
fusiform initials: generate tracheary elements (towards inside) and sieve elements (towards outside)
ray initials: generate xylem rays (towards inside) and phloem rays (towards outside)
