lecture 15 Flashcards
what is a flower?
the modified shoot of a plant which produces the reproductive structures
what is the primary function of the sepals?
protection
what is a sepal?
- a floral organ which, with the other sepals, forms the outermost whorl of modified leaves of a flower
- collectively form the calyx
- typically leaf-like and green
what is the primary function of petals?
attraction and sometimes protection
what is a petal?
- a floral organ which, with other petals, forms the secondary whorl of modified leaves of a flower
- collectively form the corolla
- often brightly coloured to attract pollinators
what is the primary function of the stamen?
produce and release pollen (contain male gametes)
what is a stamen?
- male reproductive organ of a flower
- a modified leaf that consists of an anther and filament and produces the microsporangia
- collectively the androecium, the third whorl of modified leaves of a flower
what are the primary functions of the pistil?
- form female gametes (ovules)
- receive pollen
- mediate pollen germination
- double fertilization
- produce seed-bearing fruit
what is the pistil?
- female reproductive organ of a flower
- consists of a stigma, style, and ovary
- can be a simple pistil (1 carpel) or compound (fusion of 2 or more carpels)
- collectively the gynoecium
-the fourth whorl of modified leaves of a flower
what is the stigma?
the tip of a pistil that receives the pollen
what is the style?
the stalk of a pistil that elevates the stigma
what is the ovary?
the base of a pistil that encloses the ovules
what is the receptacle?
the expanded tip of a flower stalk (pedicle or peduncle) to which the floral organs (sepals, petals, stamens, and pistil(s)) attach
what is a pedicle?
a flower stalk which bears a flower that is part of an inflorescence
what is peduncle?
the flower stalk that bears an inflorescence or a solitary flower
