lecture 16 Flashcards
what is a nectary?
- a glandular structure within a flower which secretes sugary nectar to attract pollinators
- commonly located at the base of flowers, but position is not fixed within the floral morphology
inflorescence meristem vs floral meristem
inflorescence meristem: indeterminate; continue to initiate meristems
floral meristem: determinate; produces floral organs
indeterminate vs determinate
indeterminate: flowers bloom base to tip; keeps growing and making new flowers
determinate: flowers bloom tip to base; growth stops after flowers all initiated
indeterminate inflorescence
the apical/inflorescence meristem remains indeterminate, producing lateral/floral meristems that become flowers
determinate inflorescence
the apical/inflorescence meristem terminates in a floral meristem, while the lateral meristem becomes an inflorescence meristem
gametophyte (n)
the multicellular haploid generation of a plant life cycle
sporophyte (2n)
the multicellular diploid generation of a plant life cycle
how are pollen grains produced?
each microspore undergoes mitosis to produce the microgametophyte
