lecture 8 - cranial nerves & their nuclei Flashcards
How many brainstem nuclei are there?
10
What is the general pattern of distribution of brainstem nuclei, lateral to medial?
Sensory: special somatic, general somatic, general visceral (+ taste)
Motor: general visceral, branchial, general somatic
Are sensory or motor brain stem nuclei more medial?
Motor (m for medial)
What functions are the general somatic efferent nuclei associated with?
eye and tongue movements
What functions are the branchial efferent nuclei associated with?
special skeletal muscles of the face for mastication, facial expression, shrugging shoulders, throat/larynx movements
What functions are the general visceral efferent nuclei associated with?
pupil constriction, salivary gland excretion, thoracic/abdominal visceral motor supply
What functions are the general visceral afferent nuclei associated with?
tongue and epiglottis sensation
What functions are the general somatic afferent nuclei associated with?
face, mouth, pharynx and larynx sensation
What functions are the special somatic afferent nuclei associated with?
auditory/vestibular function
Which cranial nerves are pure somatic motor?
CNIV (trochlear, eye movements), CNXII (hypoglossal, tongue movements)
Which cranial nerves are pure sensory?
CNI (olfactory, smell), CNII (optic, vision), CNVIII (vestibulocochlear, auditory/balance)
Which cranial nerves are ‘mixed’ sensory and motor?
CNIII (oculomotor), CNV (trigeminal), CNVII (facial), CNIX (glossopharyngeal), CNX (vagus), CNXI (accessory)
