lecture 26 - opthamology: preventing blindness Flashcards
What are the 4 types of refractive error?
Myopia, presbyopia, hyperopia/hypermetropia , astigmatism
What is myopia?
A refractive error where a visual image falls in front of the retina (short-sightedness)
What is hypermetropia?
Refractive error where a visual image falls behind the retina (far/long sightedness)
What is astigmatism?
A refractive error where there is rotational assymetery in the eye’s refracting power. Two lens are needed to correct this.
What is presbyopia?
A refractive error that occurs with age where the eye loses the ability to accomodate.
What are the 4 most common causes of blindness globally?
Cataracts, age related macular degeneration, glaucoma, uncorrected refractive error
