lecture 22 - facial sensation Flashcards
What are the 3 types of somatic sensory information?
Discriminative (light touch, vibration), crude touch/pain/temperature, proprioception
What is the main nerve involved in somatic sensation of the face?
Trigeminal nerve
What are the 4 cranial nerves that carry facial sensation?
Trigeminal (major), facial, glossopharyngeal, vagus (X & CrXI)
Where are the second order sensory neurons of the trigeminal nerve found?
the sensory trigeminal nuclear complex
Which nerves provide sensation to the ears?
Vagus nerve and facial nerve
What are the 3 branches of the trigeminal nerve?
Opthalmic (V1), Maxillary (V2), Mandibular (V3)
Which branch of the trigeminal nerve have a motor and sensory component?
Mandibular branch (V3)
What muscles are innervated by the motor components of the mandibular nerve (V3)?
muscles of mastications and floor of mouth, tensor tympani
What are the muscles of mastication that are innervated by the trigeminal nerve?
masseter, temporalis, lateral pterygoid, medial pterygoid
What type of somatic sensation is the mesencephalic nucleus involved in?
Proprioception
What type of somatic sensation is the chief/pontine nucleus involved in?
Light touch, vibration
What type of somatic sensation is the spinal tract nucleus of V involved in?
upper 1/3 is light touch, lower 2/3 is pain and temperature
Where do fibres of the trigeminal nerve enter the spinal cord before ascending/descending to the relevant nucleus?
Level of the pons
What is the difference in modalities between the spinothalamic tract and VTTT?
VTTT carries all modalities, while spinothalmic only carries pain and temperature
