Lecture #8 Flashcards
What are the two functions of the spinal cord?
Pathway for impulses to and from the brain, in the center for spinal reflexes
What is the foramen magnum?
A large oval shaped opening in the occipital bone of the skull
Where does the spinal cord begin and end?
It begins at the foramen magnum and terminates at the first and second lumbar vertebrae
What are cervical enlargement or a lumbar enlargement?
The enlargement of the spinal cord in those respective areas
Filum terminate cauda equina Conus Medullaris?
The most distal part of the spinal cord and it’s tapering end
Gray commissure?
A bundle of nerve fibers that surrounds the central canal of the spinal cord and connects the anterior and Dorsal horns of gray matter
Anterior median Fissure?
A groove along the anterior midline of the spinal cord the incompletely divides into two symmetrical halves
Funiculus?
A bundle of nerve fibers enclosed in a Sheath of connective tissue forming the white matter if the spinal cord
What is a reflex?
An automatic, subconscious response to stimuli with in or outside the body
What is a reflex arc consisted of?
A neural pathway that consists of a sensory receptor +2 or more neurons +an effector
What is a monosynaptic or a stretch reflex consist of?
One synapps consisting of two neurons a sensory neuron and a motor neuron
What does a polysynaptic reflex consist of?
A sensory neuron +an interneuron +a motor neuron
What is a crossed extensol reflux?
It occurs when the flexors on the effective side contract while the extensors on the contril lateral side also contract to stabilize the body during a withdrawal reflex
What is a withdrawal reflex?
Occurs when touching your stepping on something
What are ascending tracts?
Sensory impulses to the brain
