Lecture #11 Flashcards
What are the areas that ear is divided into?
The external, middle , and inner ear
What are the three areas of the outer ear?
The auricle, the external acoustic meatus , and the Tympanic membrane
What is the function of the auricle of the ear?
It is funnel shaped in collects sound waves
What is the function of the external acoustic meatus?
It is lined with ceruminous glands and carries sound to the eardrums
What does the Tympanic membrane do?
Vibrates in response to sound waves
What are the three areas of the middle ear?
The oval window, the auditory ossicles, and the auditory tube
What does the oval window do?
It translates the vibration of the stapes to move fluid in the inner ear
What is the auditory ossicles?
Three tiny bones that vibrate in response to the Tympanic membrane
What are the three bones in the middle ear?
The malleus/hammer
The Incas/anvil
The steps/stirrup
What is another name for the auditory tube?
The eustachian tube
What does the auditory tube do?
Connects the middle ear to the throat so that way the pressure can remain the same on both sides of the eardrum
What is the Tympanic reflex?
Muscular contractions that occur during loud sounds
What are the three parts of the inner ear?
The cochlea, the semicircular canals, and the vestibule
What does the cochlea do?
Functions in hearing
What does the semicircular canals do?
Function in dynamic equilibrium
