When does middle childhood occur?
6-11 years
Able to perform true mental operations (mental acts), coordinated mental actions
Concrete operations
What can children do with concrete operations?
Physical world is predictable, thinking is more organized and flexible
Can think about objects from more than one perspective, able to hold two things in mind simultaneously
Two-sided thinking
Quantity must remain the same despite changes in appearance
Logical necessity
Change in one dimension compensated by change in another
Compensation
Can reverse thinking/processes in mind
Mental reversing
What is an example of logical necessity?
Water was not added or taken away
What is an example of compensation?
Cup is taller and thinner than the other cup
What is an example of mental reversing?
If you pour water from the normal cup to the tall and skinny cup, water will be the same
Ability to think about one’s own thoughts processes, understanding how difficult it may be to solve a problem, knowing how to choose appropriate strategies to solve a problem
Metacognition
Ability to think about one’s own memory processes and capabilities
Metamemory
