Lecture 12 Flashcards
Physical aging, gradual deterioration of function
Senescence
Extra power every organ is capable of producing, declines with age, strain compromises function
Organ Reserve
Mechanism so that internal conditions remain stable
Allostasis, homeostasis
Internal environment adjust in response to external conditions
Homeostasis
Responds to challenges over time, can be come overload
Allostasis
Multitasking more difficult, reaction time increase, processing time increase

Decrease in brain size
What are some positives of the aging brain?
verbal ability, spatial reasoning, simple math, abstract thinking all increase
What are some emotions and social interactions that happen after the brain ages?

What are hormone replacement therapies related to?
Detrimental health conditions
Total death per year per 100,000, compares different age, gender, ethnic groups, and countries
Mortality rate
Measures illness and impairment, acute, chronic, physical, psychological, doesn’t necessarily correlate with mortality
Morbidity rate
How health and energetic one feels physically, intellectually, socially, joy of living, doesn’t necessarily correlate with morbidity or disability
Vitality rate
