what are the 3 phases of feeding
buccal/oral phase (tongue voluntarily pushes bolus up against the soft palate and then posteriorly
involuntary pharyngeal phase
involuntary esophageal phase
what are 4 signs of swallowing challenges in children?
-respiratory distress (coughing, choking, lips turning blue)
-refusing oral feeding
-weight loss or dehydration
-newborns may exhibit hand splaying, eyebrows creasing , gulping, “yelping”, wet or gurgly sounding breathing

what are 3 signs of swallowing challenges in adults?
coughing, or wet and gurgle sounds with eating or drinking
extra effort or time for chewing and swallowing
food or liquid leaking or getting stuck
what is a barium X-ray
drinking of a barium solution, which coats the inside of the esophagus. The doctor can see changes in the shape and movement of muscles of your esophagus
what are 5 different interventions for feeding difficulties
Parent Education
Positioning, adaptive equipment or adaptive strategies
Modification of food and liquid textures that are easier and safer to swallow
