Lecture 2: Pediatric goal setting Flashcards
why is a top-down evaluation approach done with children?
it’s occupation centred
once an understanding of the occupations/expectations has been developed, the OT can identify which aspects of occupational performance most inhibit participation
what does the top-down approach ensure?
the success of the OT intervention is always individualized to the Child’s level of performance and participation
what 2 things are movement occupations dependant on?
task characteristics
interactions among systems
to assess/evaluate is used to determine which 3 things?
what someone wants or needs to do
what they can currently do
what supports/barriers influence occupational performance and participation?
what are the 3 purposes of assessing/evaluationg
establish baseline
establish goals
inform intervention planning process
what are the 3 methods of evaluation?
activity analysis (observation)
assessment tools (standardized + non standardized)
Interviews
what is activity analysis?
the essence of paediatric OT
relies on direct observation of occupational performance
examines essential components of an activity and it’s requirements and opportunities for intervention
how might the focus of an activity analysis shift to emphasize specific components?
if someone is a neuro patient, there may be for focus on cognitive demands compared to an orthapedic patient who needs more focus on biomedical demands
what are the 3 primary beliefs of pediatric practice?
respect for children and their family
appreciation of family’s impact on child’s welfare-being
family collaboration
what 6 things do parents want from OTs?
true partnership
dependability
flexibility
sensitivity and responsiveness
positive/optimistic attitudes
effectiveness in generating outcomes
