Lecture 6: Sensory Integration Flashcards
why is it important that there is a bidirectional connection between limbic structures and thalamus
response to sensation is context dependent
what are the 3 sensory factors?
Reactivity
Perception/Discrimination
Praxis
what is over-reactivity
Reaction > Expected, impacting function
Avoidance; unexplained distress; covering eyes/ears; gagging
what is under-reactivity
Reaction < Expected, impacting function
Not making it to the bathroom in time; uses reminders/schedules; misses steps
what is Perception/Discrimination
needed to Identify, distinguish, and interpret sensory information
Avoidance or distress; postural differences; use of too much/too little force
what is praxis?
Planning, organizing and executing a goal- directed movement
Avoidance/distress; poor sequencing/timing; difficulty with two- handed tasks; doing things “differently”
what are the 3 components to praxis
Ideation: an idea of what I would like to do
Motor planning: how do I do this new thing (timing, sequencing)
Execution: actually doing it
what are sensory-based interventions
Equipment or tools used to increase or decrease energy level (arousal) using particular sensations
not evidence based
what is Ayres Sensory Integration*
Intensive, manualized intervention based on individualized assessment and goals
more evidence based, requires training
how to ask about the clients strengths
what do you/they like to do?
how to ask about their daily routine
what does a typical weekend day/school day look like?
how to identify their participation challenges
what is tricky to do right now? what would you like to be able to do by yourself?
how to learn about their reactivity?
what bothers you? does this every stop you from…. have you every hurt yourself and not noticed?
how to ask about integration?
do you bump into things or get bumped into at school? what is it like to play with other kids?
