Lab 1: Grasps + NICU Flashcards
what is the grasp sequence in order (5 stages)
palmer grasp
radial palmer grasp
radial digital grasp
immature pincer grasp
mature (fine) pincer grasp
what is a palmer grasp
4-6 months
fingers curl around object to stabilize in palm, thumb does not yet oppose fingers
what is a radial palmer grasp
6-8 months
object is still stabilized in palm, but is now supported by fingers AND thumb
what is a radial digital grasp
8-10 months
object is held between the fingers and opposed thumb. The fingers are now strong and coordinated enough to hold an object without stabilization from the palm.
what is an immature pincer grasp
10 months
object is pinched between thumb and stacked fingers
what is a mature (fine) pincer grasp
12 months
isolated index finger and thumb pick up object
what are the 3 basic goals of the NICU
comfort
simulate the environment in utero for baby
progress baby’s development that would occur in utero
How can OT support psychosocial well-being for the baby and family?
Supporting breastfeeding & skin-to-skin time
Education to parents (developmental expectations, resources, transition to home)
What 4 physical principles are trying to maintain while positioning the infant to support development?
keeping everything in midline (symmetry)
Maintain flexion of the upper and lower extremity
Avoiding abduction of hips
Keeping airways open while allowing gentle tuck of chin
What 4 psychosocial principles are trying to maintain while positioning the infant to support development?
Soothing with the pacifier
Using zaky hands to offer comfort with pressure, grasping fingers
Moving the baby slowly and in small movements
Baby’s hands should be able to go to the mouth for self-regulating and soothing (flexed and in midline).
what is the gestational age of a baby
amount of time in utero
if baby was born at 26 weeks, gestational age is 26
what is the chronological age of a baby
birth to present
baby is 3 months old
what is the corrected age of a baby
the age your baby would be if they had been born on their due date, instead of being born premature.
if baby was born 3 months early and it is now 7 months old, what is their corrected age?
corrected age is 7 months minus 3 months, giving a corrected age of 4 months.
