What is the band and sacculation conformation for the cecum?
-4 bands
-present sacculations
What is the band and sacculation conformation for the right ventral colon?
-4 bands
-present sacculations
What is the band and sacculation conformation for the left ventral colon?
-4 bands
-present sacculations
What is the band and sacculation conformation for the pelvic flexure?
-1 band
-no sacculations
What is the band and sacculation conformation for the left dorsal colon?
-1 band to start, eventually 3
-no sacculations
What is the band and sacculation conformation for the right dorsal colon?
-3 bands
-no sacculations
What is the band and sacculation conformation for the descending colon?
-2 bands
-present sacculations
Which structures are found in the left craniodorsal division of the abdomen?
-stomach
-spleen
Which structures are found in the left caudodorsal division of the abdomen?
-jejunum
-descending colon
-left kidney
Which structures are found in the left cranioventral and caudoventral divisions of the abdomen?
left dorsal and ventral colon
Which structures are found in the right craniodorsal division of the abdomen?
-liver
-descending duodenum
Which structures are found in the right caudodorsal division of the abdomen?
-base of cecum
-descending duodenum
-right kidney
Which structures are found in the right cranioventral and caudoventral divisions of the abdomen?
right dorsal and ventral colon
What is colic?
abdominal discomfort; seen in equine
What are the common etiologies of colic?
-displacement of colon
-impaction
Where does displacement of the colon most commonly occur?
pelvic flexure
Where are impactions most likely to occur?
-ileum to cecum
-pelvic flexure
-transverse colon
Why is the pelvic flexure a common site of impaction?
-very dramatic decrease in size at a turn
-most mobile part of colon; can do 180 or 360 degree twists
How can a pelvic flexure 180 degree twist be identified?
feeling sacculations on the dorsal aspect during palpation
What are the characteristics of the equine liver?
-bulk is located slightly to the right of the median plane
-contacts the right kidney
What are the five lobes of the equine liver?
-left lateral lobe
-left medial lobe
-quadrate lobe
-right lobe
-caudate lobe/process
What is unique about the bile situation in equine?
-no gall bladder
-bile has no storage, just constant flow
What are the characteristics of the equine spleen?
-wide dorsal end located lateral to left kidney
-sits against left abdominal wall
-located as far caudal as L1
-ventral tail reaches ventral 1/3 of ribs 10-11
