Lecture 19 3/25/24 Flashcards
What classification is given to permanent equine teeth?
hypsodont
What are the general characteristics of equine teeth?
-long, with bulk of tooth embedded in jaw
-slowly erupt over time as animal wears them at occlusal surface
What are the components of an incisor tooth?
-cup
-dental/pulp cavity
-dental star
What are the characteristics of the dental star?
-formation of secondary dentine by primary dentine
-remnant of pulp cavity
When is a tooth considered “in wear?”
when in contact with the opposite arcade
What is the deciduous tooth formula?
3 0 3 / 3 0 3 (no molars)
How are the premolars numbered?
2, 3, 4 from rostral to caudal
What is the permanent tooth formula?
3 1 3(4) 3 / 3 1 3 3
How do newly erupted permanent teeth differ from deciduous teeth?
-labial surface: deciduous teeth have striations; permanent teeth have single groove
-neck: deciduous teeth have prominent neck; permanent do not
-size: deciduous teeth are about as tall as wide; permanent teeth are taller than wide
How are the incisor teeth numbered?
-central: I1
-intermediate: I2
-corner: I3
What is the infundibulum?
depression in tooth on occlusal surface that houses the invagination/cup
What eventually replaces the cup as it becomes shallower with wear?
dental star
What is a wolf tooth?
first upper premolar, if present
What is the enamel spot?
bottom of the cup
Which teeth are used for aging based on presence/absence of cups?
lower incisors
When is a tooth considered “level?”
when all edges of the occlusal surface are “in wear” and the surface is level
How does the shape of the occlusal surface change as the permanent incisors erupt?
-begins oval
-transitions to round
-ends more triangular
Why is it better to age based on eruption compared to wear?
wear can be artificially excelerated, but eruption is consistent
How should aging based on teeth be worded?
“this horse has the teeth of a xx age horse”
How is angulation used in aging teeth?
teeth are more in line when young, and angle increases with age
