Lecture 17 3/18/24 Flashcards
Which epidermal structures are present in the hoof?
-wall
-frog
-sole
What are the four regions of the hoof wall?
-toe
-quarters
-heels
-bars
What are the stratum layers of the hoof wall?
-stratum externum
-stratum medium
-stratum internum
What are the characteristics of the stratum externum?
-aka periople
-protective layer on outside of hoof
What is the main characteristic of the stratum medium?
makes up the bulk of the hoof wall
What are the characteristics of the stratum internum?
-aka horny laminae
-lacks innervation and is insensitive
-resembles underside of mushroom cap
What are the characteristics of the frog?
-expands on palmar surface to form the bulbs of the heels
-separated from bars and sole by deep paracuneal grooves
-acts as a cushion
-applies pressure to veins to push blood towards heart
What is the sole?
filler area between the frog and hoof wall
What are the characteristics of the hoof cartilages?
-provides support to hoof wall
-aids in hoof expansion under weight
-can mineralize and form “sidebones”
Where does the coronary groove sit?
top of proximal hoof wall, inside
What are the regions of the dermis?
-perioplic dermis
-coronary dermis
-laminar dermis
-dermis of sole
-dermis of frog
What does the perioplic dermis produce?
stratum externum
What does the coronary dermis produce?
stratum medium
What does the laminar dermis produce?
sensitive lamina that interdigitates with the insensitive laminae of epidermis
What are the characteristics of the coronary band?
-on top of perioplic dermis
-junction between skin and hoof
