Lecture 13 2/21/24 Flashcards
What are the characteristics of the ergot?
-tuft of hair on palmar/plantar side of fetlock (metacarpo-phalangeal joint)
-vestigial metacarpal/metatarsal pad
What are the characteristics of the ligaments of the ergot?
-extend obliquely to attach to hoof cartilages
-collagenous connective tissue
-used as a marker during nerve blocks
What are the characteristics of the chestnut?
-horny excrescence
-vestiges of carpal and tarsal pads
-medial and proximal on carpus
-medial and distal on tarsus
What are the characteristics of the interosseous muscle?
-entirely tendinous
-attaches to proximal sesamoid bones
-part of passive stay apparatus
What are the insertions of the interosseous ligament?
-cruciate sesamoidean ligament
-oblique sesamoidean ligament
-straight sesamoidean ligament
-intersesamoidean ligament
-extensor branches
Which insertion of the interosseous lig. crosses two joints?
straight sesamoidean lig.
What are the synovial structures of the equine distal limb?
-digital sheaths
-dorsal and palmar/plantar pouches
-navicular bursa
What are the characteristics of dorsal and palmar/plantar pouches?
-extensions of joint capsules
-allow for injections from the side
Where is the navicular bursa located?
between the distal sesamoid bone and DDF
Where is the distal sesamoid bone located?
palmar/plantar surface of distal interphalangeal joint
Where do the ligaments of the distal sesamoid bone run to?
proximal: to P1
distal: to P3
Which annular ligaments are present in the equine?
-palmar annular lig.
-proximal digital annular lig.
-distal digital annular lig.
What does the proximal digital annular lig. look like?
giant X along the palmar/plantar surface
