Lecture 4: integument Flashcards
Stratum Basale (Germinativium)
Layers of stem cells
High mitotic activity
small cuboidal cells
intense basophila of layer
Stratium Spinosum
Several layers of cells
attached to neighbors via desmosomes
layer where cell morphology begins to change
Statum Granulosum
Most superficial nonkeratanized layer
1-3 cell layers thick
Keratohylain granules
Apoptotic
Statum Lucidum
**THICK SKIN highly eosinophilic flattened cells advanced keratinization no cellular organelles visible
Stratum corneum
no cellular organelles
keratin filled plates
coated with lipids
WATER BARRIER
What are the 5 epidermal layers? (superficial –> deep)
Stratum corneum Stratum lucidum Stratum graulosum Stratum spinosum Stratum basale
Define dermal papillae
fingerlike projections into the undersurface of epidermis
Netheton Syndrome
Autosomal recessive –> SPINK5 gene–> regulates LEKTI
abnormal skin shedding, brittle hair, ischthyosiform erythroderma, high risk of dehydration
Psoriasis
genetic autoimmune cause: PSORS1 gene –> hyper poliferative disease of keratinocytes
Where are Melanocytes found?
Stratum Basale (produce pigment , dendritic cell)
What controls coloration (4)
Balance between: Melanin, Carotene, Eumelanin, Pheomelanin
Melenoma ABC’s
Asymmetry Border Color Diameter (derived from melanocyte) radial growth phase --> vertical growth phae
Merkel Cell
- cutaneous sensation
- in Stratum basale
- Merkel corpuscle
- *Merkel Cell Carcinoma
Langerhans’ Cell
- originate in bone marrow
- immune function
- stratum spinosum
Skin sensation of bare nerve ending
fine touch, heat, cold, pain
Skin sensation of merkel cell
mechanoreceptor
Skin sensation: Pacinian corpuscle
pressure, vibration
skin sensation: Krause’s end bulb
cold
skin sensation: Meissner’s corpuscle
low frequency stimuli
skin sensation: ruffini’s corpuscle
stretch and torque
Characteristics of hair
- found in thin skin ONLY
- composed of hard keratin
- sebaceous glands attached to follicles
Acne
blockage/ infection of follicle:
- blackhead (oxidized)
- whitehead
Pseudofolliculitis barbae
ingrown hair
Unguis incarnatus
Toe nail growth into skin of toe
Fungal infections
dermatophyte infections –> keratinases allow rapid infection of STRATUM CORNEUM
- tinea barbae
- Onycomycosis (toe fungus)
1st Degree burn (superficial)
- Layer: epidermis
- Red no blisters
- painful
2nd degree burn (superficial partial thickness)
- Layer: superficial dermis
- redness and blisters
- very painful
3rd degree burn (full thickness)
- Layer: entire dermis
- stiff white/brown
- painless
2nd degree burn (deep partial thickness)
- Layer: reticular (deep) dermis
- Yellow/ white
- pressure
4th degree burn (complete)
Layer: entire dermis –> fat muscle bone
- black and charred
- painless
