Lecture 4 8/30/23 Flashcards
How do blood vessels form?
-mesoderm aggregates into “blood islands,” or clumps of cells
-outside of blood islands arrange and fuse to form vessels
-inside of blood islands become RBCs
What is the role of the septum premum?
subdivides the primitive atrium into the left and right atria
What is the role of the inter-ventricular sulcus?
subdivides the primitive ventricle into left and right ventricles
In the fetus, blood is diverted around which two organs in order to allow for more efficient function?
-lungs
-liver
What is the role of the ductus venosus?
-diverts blood from umbilical vein to inferior/caudal vena cava
-skips the liver
What is the role of the foramen ovale?
-diverts blood from right atrium to left atrium
-skips the lungs
What is the role of the ductus arteriosus?
-diverts blood from pulmonary artery to aorta
-skips the lungs
What is a patent ductus arteriosus?
a ductus arteriosus that fails to close after birth
What structure does the ductus arteriosus become after birth?
ligamentum arteriosum
What structure does the foramen ovale become after birth?
fossa ovalis
What structure does the ductus venosus become after birth?
ligamentum venosum
What structure does the umbilical vein become after birth?
falciform ligament
What structure do the umbilical arteries become after birth?
round ligaments of the bladder
What structure does the urachus become after birth?
urachal ligament
What does the mesoderm surrounding the neural tube become?
-vertebrae
-intervertebral discs
