Lecture 32 11/8/23 Flashcards
What constitutes the oral mucosa?
epithelium and lamina propria
What type of epithelium is found in the oral mucosa?
stratified squamous
What is labial?
related to/near the lips
What is buccal?
related to/near the cheek
What is lingual?
related to/near the tongue
What are the palatine arches?
oral mucosa caudal to the last molar teeth
What is the mucocutaneous junction of the lip?
where the oral mucosa of the inner lip and the haired skin of the outer lip meet
What is the orbicularis oris muscle?
skeletal muscle of the lips; encircles the mouth
What is a commisure?
angle where upper and lower lips meet
What are the characteristics of the filiform papillae?
-most common
-mechanical function only/no taste buds
-conical/pointy/shark fin shape
-provide tongue’s coarse appearance
What are the characteristics of the fungiform papillae?
-mushroom-shaped
-have taste buds within the papillae
What are the characteristics of circumvallate papillae?
-least common
-largest
-cylindrical
-have taste buds within the papillae
-only on caudal portion of tongue
What are the characteristics of taste buds?
-microscopic intraepithelial gustatory sensory organ
-composed of spindle-shaped cells
-roughly oval and less deeply stained
What tissue covers the surface of the ventral tongue?
stratified squamous epithelium
What is the lingual frenulum?
midline band of tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth
What tissues are present within the tongue?
-skeletal muscle
-adipose tissue
-lingual salivary glands
How are the skeletal muscle and adipose tissue of the tongue arranged?
in varying parallel and perpendicular bundles (plaid pattern)
What are the characteristics of the gingiva?
-oral mucosa that covers only the bones that support the teeth
-lamina propria contains only dense connective tissue
What is the role of the palate?
separates oral cavity from nasal cavity
Which tissue types are found on each side of the palate?
-resp. epithelium on the dorsal surface
-oral mucosa on the ventral surface
What is the hard palate?
the part of the palate that is ridged and contains bone
What is the soft palate?
the part of the palate only containing skeletal muscle and no bone
What is contained within the pulp cavity?
-blood vessels
-nerves
-connective tissue
What are the characteristics of the dentin?
-makes up majority of tooth
-produced by odontoblasts
What are the characteristics of enamel?
-hard outer covering on exposed tooth
-produced by ameloblasts
-primarily calcium hydroxyapatite
What is cementum?
substance that covers the surface of tooth roots
What is the periodontal ligament?
attaches tooth to alveolar bone
What is alveolar bone?
bony tooth socket
What are simple/brachydont teeth?
teeth that stop growing after eruption
What are complex/hypsodont teeth?
teeth that continually grow throughout life
