Lecture 31 The Gut Microbiota in Health and Disease Flashcards
Firmicutes are reduced in what IBD
UC
What features of IBD itself could affect the microbiota
- Antibiotic use
- Inflammation
- Diarrhoea (affects transit time)
- Host diet
- Host genotype
Define Probiotics
are live microorganisms which, when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host- yoghurt added live bacteria (Lactobacillus casei)
Define Prebiotics
a substrate that is selectively utilized by host microorganisms conferring a health benefit- spring onion, asparagus, artichokes (food for resident bacteria)
Mechanism of Action for Probiotics
- Competition
- Bioconversions (diet)
- Production of vitamins
- Direct antagonism (pathogens)
- Competitive exclusion
- Barrier function
- Reduce inflammation
- Immune stimulation
What type of bonds do probiotics contains
Beta 2-4 bonds- no enzymes in human body can digest it
What is the ideal antibiotic
Bactericidal, narrow spectrum
Example of bactericidal, narrow spectrum antibiotic
Polymyxin B
