lecture 31: male reproductive sys Flashcards
organs
gonads
sys of ducts
accessory sex glands
supporting structures
urology
study of urinary sys
scrotum
- supporting structure
- outpouching of anterior abdominal wall
- raphe
- scrotal septum; dartos muscle
- protection
- temp reg: 2 muscles contract in response to cold temperatures to maintain testicular temp; the cremaster, the dartos
testes
- male gonads
- partially covers the tunica vaginalis; internal to the visceral layer is the tunica albuginea
what are the seminiferous tubules lined with?
(what cells)
- seminiferous tubules are lined w two types of cells: spermatogenic cells, nurse (sertoli) cells
- in spaces between adjacent seminiferous tubules are clusters of interstitial endocrine (leydig) cells
how do sperm move from the seminiferous tubules
by a sys of ducts within the testes toward the epididymis where they complete their maturation
epididymis
located within the tunica vaginalis and consists mostly of the ducts of the epididymis
has: head, body, tail
- transport sperm during ejaculation into ductus deferens
ductus deferens
- ascend from tail of epididymis
- features: dilated terminal portion referred to as the ampulla
- transport sperm during ejaculatin into the ejaculatory ducts
muscular tube that carries sperm from the epididymis in the testes to the ejaculatory ducts in the prostate gland
ejaculatory ducts
- union of the duct of the seminal gland and the ampulla of the ductus deferens
- originate superior to the prostate and terminates in the prostatic urethra
delivers sperm into the urethra
male urethra
serves as a passageway for both semen and urine and consists of three regions:
- prostatic urethra
- membranous urethra
- spongy urethra
spermatic cord
- passes thru the inguinal canal to enter the pelvic cavity
- contains neurovascular structures
accessory sex glands
- secrete most of the liquid portion of semen
- accessory glands in males: seminal glands, prostate, bulbourethral glands
seminal glands
- lateral to ampulla of vas deferens
- secretes an alkaline fluid referred to as seminal fluid which accounts for approx 60% of the volume of semen
prostate
- inferior to urinary bladder surrounding the prostatic urethra
- secretes an acidic fluid that contains: citric acid, proteolytic enzymes
- prostatic secretions enter the prostatic urethra via prostatic ducts and account for approx 25% of volume of semen
bulbourethral glands
- inferior to the prostate on either side of membranous urethra
- secretes an alkaline fluid that contains mucous
- secretions enter the spongy urethra via 2 bulbourethral ducts
