scrotum

A
  • supporting structure
  • outpouching of anterior abdominal wall
  • raphe
  • scrotal septum; dartos muscle
  • protection
  • temp reg: 2 muscles contract in response to cold temperatures to maintain testicular temp; the cremaster, the dartos

Q

what are the seminiferous tubules lined with?
(what cells)

A
  • seminiferous tubules are lined w two types of cells: spermatogenic cells, nurse (sertoli) cells
  • in spaces between adjacent seminiferous tubules are clusters of interstitial endocrine (leydig) cells

Q

epididymis

A

located within the tunica vaginalis and consists mostly of the ducts of the epididymis
has: head, body, tail
- transport sperm during ejaculation into ductus deferens

Q

ductus deferens

A
  • ascend from tail of epididymis
  • features: dilated terminal portion referred to as the ampulla
  • transport sperm during ejaculatin into the ejaculatory ducts

muscular tube that carries sperm from the epididymis in the testes to the ejaculatory ducts in the prostate gland

Q

ejaculatory ducts

A
  • union of the duct of the seminal gland and the ampulla of the ductus deferens
  • originate superior to the prostate and terminates in the prostatic urethra

delivers sperm into the urethra

Q

male urethra

A

serves as a passageway for both semen and urine and consists of three regions:
- prostatic urethra
- membranous urethra
- spongy urethra

A
  • secrete most of the liquid portion of semen
  • accessory glands in males: seminal glands, prostate, bulbourethral glands

Q

seminal glands

A
  • lateral to ampulla of vas deferens
  • secretes an alkaline fluid referred to as seminal fluid which accounts for approx 60% of the volume of semen

Q

prostate

A
  • inferior to urinary bladder surrounding the prostatic urethra
  • secretes an acidic fluid that contains: citric acid, proteolytic enzymes
  • prostatic secretions enter the prostatic urethra via prostatic ducts and account for approx 25% of volume of semen

Q

bulbourethral glands

A
  • inferior to the prostate on either side of membranous urethra
  • secretes an alkaline fluid that contains mucous

Q

penis

A
  • supporting structure
  • passageway for ejaculation of semen and excretion of urine
  • cylindrical and consists of 3 regions: root, body, glans penis
17
Q

root of penis

A

has the bulb, and crura of the penis

18
Q

body of penis

A
  • composed of 3 cylindrical masses of erectile tissue that are individually surrounded by the tunica albuginea: one smaller midventral corpus spongiosum penis, 2 dorsolateral corpora cavernosa penis
19
Q

glans penis

A
  • slightly enlarged distal end of the corpus spongiosum penis; margin is the corona
  • distal urethra enlarges with the glans penis to form the external urethral oriice
  • covering the glans penis is the prepuce
20
Q

Erections

A
  • parasympathetic fibres from sacral portion of the spinal cord initiate and maintain an erection
  • ejaculation is a sympathetic reflex from the lumbar portion of the spinal cord
  • peristaltic contraction of the system of ducts and the accessory sex glands propel a small volume of semen into the spongy urethra
    process known as emission
