Lecture 24 Flashcards
1
Q
The Middle Ear
A
is beyond the eardrum and is an air-filled space connected to the pharynx by the Eustachian tube
2
Q
The External Ear
A
consists of the pinna and the ear canal, sealed at its end by the tympanic membrane, or eardrum.
3
Q
The Inner Ear
A
contains the sensors: cochlea for hearing and the vestibular apparatus for equilibrium.
3
Q
What is sound?
A
pressure waves
3
Q
Frequency
A
is the number of wave peaks per second (in hertz (Hz)).
4
Q
How do we perceive frequency?
A
as pitch (low frequency= low pitch)
5
Q
Steps of Sound Vibration
A
- The eardrum vibrates the malleus (hammer) bone
- The malleus moves the incus (anvil)
- The incus which moves the stapes (stirrup)
- The stapes pushes like a piston against the oval window, a membrane between middle and inner ear.
