lecture 23 - shoulder injuries Flashcards
What are the 5 most common causes of shoulder pain?
Instability, cuff impingement, cuff tear, frozen shoulder, arthritis
What is the difference between cuff impingement and cuff tear?
Impingement caused by repetitive activity, while a tear is an acute injury
What are the two classifications of shoulder instability?
Anterior dislocation, posterior dislocation
What is the most common type (95%) of shoulder dislocation/instability?
Anterior dislocation
What are the 2 most common causes of posterior dislocation (rarest type of shoulder dislocation)?
Epileptic fit, electrocution
What are some of the associated injurie of shoulder instability?
Torn labrum, humeral head or glenoid fracture, rotator cuff tear
What is cuff impingement syndrome?
Pain originating from the sub-acromial space due to inflammation of tendons and/or bursa - often from overuse
What age group most commonly presents with cuff tears?
50-60s - ‘grey hair = cuff tear”
What is the pathophysiology of frozen shoulder?
Contracture and thickening of the coraco-humeral ligament and other structures in the shoulder, reducing joint volume and causing stiffness
What are the symptoms of glenohumeral osteoarthritis?
Pain at rest and night, gradual onset, intermittent exacerbations of pain
