lecture 13 - muscle performance Flashcards
What type of fibre are type 1 muscle fibres?
Slow oxidative fibres
What are the features of type 1 muscle fibres?
Many mitochondria, lots of oxidative enzymes, rich blood supply
What type of fibres are type IIB muscle fibres?
Glycolytic fibres
What type of fibres are type IIA muscle fibres?
Intermediate fibres
What is the velocity-load relationship?
It is slower to shorten a bigger load
What are the effects of strength training on muscle fibres?
Increased actin and myosin, hypertrophy (increases fibre diameter)
What are the effects of endurance training on muscle fibres?
Increased oxidative capacity:
Increased mitochondria, increased capillary supply, increased lipid storage
What is a motor unit?
A single motor neurone and all of the muscle fibres that neurone innervates
What are the 2 mechanisms for regulating motor units?
Modulating the rate/frequency of APs fired, regulating the number of motor units activated
What is muscle tetanus?
Maximum obtainable force at a high stimulus frequency
