18
Q

What is climate change

A

The long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, human activities have been the main driver of climate change, primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas), which produces heat-trapping greenhouse gases.

19
Q

What is the main driver of climate change

A

Greenhouse effect

20
Q

What do GHG in the atmosphere act like

A

bit like the glass in a greenhouse or a blanket, trapping the sun’s heat and stopping it from leaking back into space and causing global warming.

21
Q

Burning coal, oil and gas produces what

A

carbon dioxide(CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O).

22
Q

Recent changes in the climate are described as

A

Widespread
Rapid
Intesifyinh
Unprecedented

23
Q

How much has emissions from agricultural sector increase in 2020

A

3.0%
•Increased use of synthetic nitrogen fertiliser(5.2%)
•Higher dairy cow numbers (2.8%)
•increase in milk production (5.5%)

24
Q

How much have CO2 emissions increased since 2020

A

17.3%

25
Q

Liming on soils has increased by how much in 2021

A

49.5%

26
Q

How much of an increase in methane emissions in 2021

A

17.7%

27
Q

How much of an increase in emissions from manure management

A

29.6%

28
Q

In the last 10 years how much have dairy cow numbers increased by

A

44.5% with a 62.8% increase in milk production

29
Q

Climate Action Plan aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by how much by the year 2030

A

51%

30
Q

More than what percentage of farming’s GHG emissions are directly linked to the 7.3 million animals now being reared, and the manure they creat

A

80 per cent

31
Q

What fraction of emissions is blamed on fertilisers

A

An eighth

32
Q

Agriculture (animal manures) responsible for what percent of national NH3 emissions,

A

99 per cent

33
Q

In 2020, the number of dairy cows on Irish farms rose for the ___ consecutive year, climbing by 3.2%.

A

10th consecutive year

34
Q

Climate Action Plan requires agriculture to reduce GHG emissions by what %

A

25%

35
Q

while fraction must replace calcium ammonium nitrate fertiliser with less-damaging protected urea.

A

two-thirds

36
Q

Better breeding will produce cattle that can reach desired weights quicker, which will mean that they can be slaughtered ____ months earlier, at 24 months, rather than 27 months today.

A

three months earlier
