1975 Māori Land March
-Te Rōpu o te Matakite -organising committee of the
-1975 Land March on Parliament.
-Started at Te Hapua (Northland) ended at Wellington.
-Whina Cooper was prominent in the march.
-Forced the Labour Government to pass legislation that set up the Waitangi Tribunal
Whina Cooper
-Prominent in the land march (1975)
-Involved in maori women’s league
-> helped with the welfare of maori people in the aftermath of urbanisation
-She walked all the way from cape regna to wellington to protest
-Note: Different time 1975 -> old people were expected to sit around and do nothing
Bastion Point
-Ngāti Whātua and other protestors take a stand in respect to Ngāti Whātua’s last piece of land at Orakei in Auckland.
- In 1977 protesters occupied Bastion Point, after the announcement of a housing development on land once
belonging to Ngāti Whātua.
-After 506 days the police and army arrived en masse, to remove them.

Māori must claim that they have been
-prejudicially affected by the Crown
-and which the Crown’s actions or omissions
-were inconsistent with the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi
Treaty of Waitangi Amendment Act 1985
-Allowed the Tribunal to consider claims prior to 1975
-Claims “flood” into the Tribunal
Waitangi Tribunal hears the Bastion Point case first: Orakei Report (1987)
- Daming towards the Government actions of taking Ngāti Whātua’s land over a century
- In breach of Principles of the Treaty
- “Duty of active protection”

-1995 Settles with Waikato-Tainui for $150m
-Queen Elizabeth II delivers the apology to Tainui and signs the Tainui Raupatu Bill 1995
