Lecture 11: Mating Flashcards
Why is mate choice important?
it is important when thinking about the competitive ability of your offspring
What is mate choice?
being choosy such that particular aspects of traits will be passed one and will increase in frequency (if the can be passed down, heritable)
How would you make sense of social interactions related to sexual reproduction?
- Identify the sex types within the population. (makes & females or hermaphrodites)
- describe the mating system: social sexual structure of a population.
What are males?
Sex type that produce smaller gametes called sperm
What are females?
Sex type that produce larger gametes called eggs
What are Hermaphrodites?
A single indivgual that produce sperm and eggs
wither at the same time or at different times during your life (sequential or simultaneous)
What is the mating system of Monogamy?
One male and one female
High levels of shared parental care
What is polygyny?
1 male
multiple females
What is Polyandry?
1 female
multiple males
What is polygynandry?
multiple males & females
What classifies polygynu, polyandry, and polygynandry?
They are all promiscuous mating systems.
What are secondary sex characteristics?
Characteristics of males and females that are not directly involved in reproduction
What is sexual selection?
Differences in reproductive rates among individuals as a result of differences in mating success
What is Intrasexual sexual selection
Males fighting males for a mate
fighting witin the same sex
What is intersexual sexual selection
Frogs have to call to get a mate.
or the ability for a male to get a female to mate with them.
Why would female guppies want to male with brightly colored males if they are more obvious to predators?
Makes it easier for them to find one another
Can flowers self pollinate?
No they cannot
True or false:
Some plants exhibit non-random mating
True
not all pollen sires seeds equally
True or false:
There sometimes appears to be interference competition, in which interactions between pollen inhibits pollen germination
True
What is sexual conflict?
Asymmetry between sexes in potential evolutionary benefits and costs of any particular mating event.
Why not have sex?
Risk of injury or disease,; costs time and energy.
Females face what challanges when carrying young?
Decreased foraging efficiency and increased depredation risk while carrying male or offspring
What is co-evolution?
reciprocal evolutionary interaction between two or more evolving groups (such as males and females)
What is the sexual arms race?
Over the course of evolution, conflicting benefits/costs of mating has led to coevolution of armaments.
