What is IHR?

What are the rules of IHR?
Countries are required to report outbreaks/events and must notify all public health events that may be a public health emergency of international concern
What diseases do IHRs cover?
smallpox, polio, human influenza caused by new subtype, severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS)
What does PHEIC stand for?
Public Health Emergency of International Concern
What 4 questions are asked when considering PHEIC?
Is the public health impact of the event serious?
Is the event unusual or unexpected?
Is there a significant risk of international spread?
Is there a significant risk of international travel or trade restrictions?
What criteria make it PHEIC?
If two of the four questions are yes
What agency do countries report IHR events to?
the World Health Organization
What 4 areas of the IHRs must countries do?
detect, assess, report, respond
How do OIE, FAO, and WHO communicate?
via the global early warning system
