Jack pines cones
A
- difficult to open
- require fire to open them
- temp of 50* celcius required
- delayed reaction= serotinous cones
- after a forest fire the cones open up slowly and the seeds fall out
- jack pines are fire adapted, use fire to their advantage
- fire changes the ground beneath the trees,

Duff Layer
A
dead pine needles below the tree, underneath is the mineral soil. Fire burns the duff layer, exposing the mineral soil to the seeds.

Why do fires occur?
A
- less precip
- winds off of the prairie fuel the fire
- high number of lightning storms in the western boreal
- relatively flat land
- conifers are full of resin and burn well
