Lecture 1: Jan 8th Flashcards
Biodiversity
The total number of flora and fauna. Ontario’s biodiversity is 100,000+
Why so rich?
Varying habitats Variation of abiotic factors - seasonal changes - precipitation - wind - soil type - rocks - fire
Sedimentary rocks
Formed from sediments, fairly young (400-500 million years old). Limestone is sedimentary rock, rich in calcium, relatively soft and basic in pH
Effervesces
The bubbly thing hydrochloride acid does to sedimentary rocks because they contain calcium
Igneous rocks
Formed from molten lava underground. Usually have lots of calcium, have lots of silica and are hard and acidic. Silica is a very hard and abrasive material, found in grass like plants
Metamorphic rocks
Formed from pre existing rocks, transformed by heat and pressure. Maintain the chemistry of the parent rock. When granite is exposed to heat and pressure it becomes gneiss, which is acidic and lacks calcium. Limestone can be metamorphosed l, becomes marble.
