Lecture 10 Flashcards
1
Q
2 functional units of the liver
A
Lobular arrangement
Liver acinus
2
Q
Liver acinus arrangement (ZONES)
A
Zone 1 - glycogen and plasma protein production
2
3- detoxification
3
Q
Functions of Bile
A
- Emulsification of fats
- Neutralises stomach acid
- Excretory channel for bilirubin
4
Q
2 areas in the liver lobule responsible for blood supply
A
- portal triad
Composed of, hepatic artery, bile duct, hepatic portal v - central vein
Takes blood away from the lobule to the IVC
5
Q
Blood pressure in liver
A
Quite low, but with low resistance, it is possible for this.
- cirrhosis leads to ↑ vascular resistance= low blood supply
6
Q
Functions of the liver
A
Produce bile
Metabolism of carbs, fats and proteins
Detoxification of toxins
7
Q
Function of kupffer cells
A
Destroy pathogens and old RBC
8
Q
Glucose buffer in the liver
A
- glycogen storage
- convert galactose and fructose to glucose
- amino acids —> glucose (gluconeogenesis)
- fats —> glucose
9
Q
Fat stores, energy in liver
A
Fatty acids = ketone bodies and ATP (energy)- beta oxidation
Glycerol = glucose
