What laws are the EMS System governed by?
Governed by state laws
What curriculum does California and most other states follow for EMTs?
The DOT curriculum and recognize 4 licensure levels: EMR, EMT, AEMT, and Paramedic.

What must all EMS Systems have according to state law?
A medical director who MUST be a physician; all training, protocols, and practices must follow state law
What does the CQI do?
Identifies areas needing improvement and provides remedial training through use of audits and reviews.
What are some professional attributes of EMTs?
Makes patient’s needs a priority WITHOUT unnecessarily endangering self, be willing to serve others, treat everyone with respect, etc.

What do EMRs do?
Basic life support and may provide care prior to ambulance arrival
What do EMTs do?
Basic life support
What do AEMTs do?
Basic life support with limited advanced life saving skills
What do paramedics do?
Extensive advanced life support
What is on-line contact with a medical director?
Through radio, telephone, or paramedics contacting base hospital for orders
What is off-line contact with a medical director?
Following protocols and standing orders; EMTs are pre-authorized to render certain care
