Lecture 1 & 2- Intro to Ecology Flashcards
Emergent Properties
Result from the arrangement and interaction of parts as complexity increases
What is ecology?
Quantitative science that explains how organisms interact w their environment
Abiotic Factor
physical factor rather than biological or living (Temp/ water)
Biotic factor
factor related to living things (predators/ parasites)
Dispersal
movement of individuals or gametes away from the point of origin
Range expansion
organisms disperse to an area where they did not exist previously
Longitudinal studies
study the same place over a set period
Remote Sensing
Using satellite imaging to understand what covers the world
Niche Models
Show the range of conditions tolerated by a species (think about all conditions a species needs to survive)
Biosphere
all of Earth’s organisms, plus the physical space we all inhabit
Biome
Major life zones characterized by vegetation type in terrestrial zones or physical environment in aquatic biomes
Disturbance
Event that changes a community by removing organisms or altering resource availability
Climate
Long-term prevailing weather conditions in a given area
Difference between weather and climate
the temperature today vs the average annual temperature
What causes seasonality on earth?
Earth is tilted on its axis
