Lec. 34 - Origin of Species Flashcards
Compare analogus vs. homologous structures.
Analogous structures are different structures with a similar function, they are convergent. Homologous structures are similar structures but with different functions, and they are divergent.
Describe Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium conditions.
Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium conditions are that the allele frequencies will not change from one generation to the next, and that the actual genotype frequencies observed in the population will match the predicted genotypes.
Describe natural selection.
Natural Selection just selects among whatever variations exists in the population, the result is evolution.
Explain how species remain isolated. (geographical, temporal, behavioral, mechanical)
Species stay isolated geographically (physical separation), temporal (different breeding times (seasons, time of day), behavioral (mating differences), and mechanical (incompatibility)
Describe the different types of reproductive isolation. (pre-zygotic and post-zygotic)
Pre-zygotic barriers have temporal isolation, habitat isolation, and behavioral isolation. Post-zygotic barriers have hybrid inviability, hybrid sterility, and hybrid breakdown.
