Lec. 13 - Cellular Energy Flashcards
What is Gibbs Free Energy?
GFE is a thermodynamic quantity that measures the max amount of useful work that can be extracted from a thermodynamic system under constant temp and pressure.
Explain the factors affecting enzyme reaction rate.
The factors affecting enzyme reaction rate are substrate concentration, enzyme concentration, pH level, temperature, enzyme inhibitors,, and cofactors and coenzymes.
Describe the purpose of cellular respiration.
The overall purpose involves a series of biochem. reactions like glycolysis, pyruvate oxidation, krebs cycle, and the ETC.
Explain oxidation/reduction reactions.
Oxidation refers to the loss of electrons by a substance or an increase in its oxidation state. Reduction refers to the gain of electrons by a substance or a decrease in its oxidation state.
