Lec. 26 - Genes Flashcards

1
Q

Explain telomeres and telomerase.

A

Telomeres are the ends of linear chromosomes, and they have repetitive sequences that do not code for a particular gene. Telomerase is an enzyme that helps to maintain the stability and functionality of chromosomes by preserving the length of telomeres.

Q

Describe the function of a primer.

A

Primers are used because DNA polymerases can only add deoxyribonucleotides to the 3’ -OH group of an existing chain and cannot begin, but Primase can add ribonucleotides.
