How do you know if the pregnancy is late in gestation?
Full skeleton is present.
What makes a dog at an increased risk of dystocia?
Breed, obesity, and increased puppy size (single pup liters)
What placental structures are special to cows, goats, and sheep?
Placentome
What is the maternal side of the placentome?
Caruncle
What is the fetal side of the placentome?
Cotyledon
How can you tell the difference between a cow and goat placenta?
Cows have a big button placentome, while goats/sheep have a c-shaped placentome
At what point in a cows gestation do you need to do a fetal count?
40 to 60 days
Why is it so important to do a fetal count in cows ?
Need to know for feed management, increased babies need more food. Also important to know how many babies to expect when labor occurs.
When is the best time to do a puppy count?
50 days or after.
How can you get an idea of the age of the puppies?
Things ossify in a certain order. Make sure to note what structures are visiable or not. Why it is important to take two x-rays.
What starts labor in a dog?
Puppies will begin to run out of room and release a stress hormone to induce labor.
Why are single puppy births concerning sometimes?
Puppy will not run out of room so you have a decreased cortisol level and puppy may not be able to initiate labor on its own.
When looking at a fetus what can give you an idea if dystocia will occur in labor?
Size of the head compared to the pelvis
What is CTUP?
Combined thickness of uterus and placenta
What is CTUP used for?
Horses, to determine health of the fetus.
