What are the radiological signs of diaphragmatic hernias?
Border effacement with diaphragm
Soft tissue opacity in mediastinum/pleural space
Concurrent pleural free fluid forms
Why is there pleural free fluid in cases of diaphragmatic hernias?
due to the irritation of the intestines being present
What are the causes of diaphragmatic hernias?
Congenital
– or –
Traumatic
When does a diaphragmatic hernia become an emergency surgery?
When liver passes
What is PPDH?
Congenital lesion! not the hernia itself
What trauma is a diaphragmatic hernia commonly associated with?
Pelvic fractures
What can diaphragmatic hernias do to the heart? Why?
Cause right sided heart failure
intestines putting a lot of pressure on heart, while the right side is a low pressure side
How can you tell if the liver is involved in the hernia?
look at placement of the stomach
What are signs that there is a body wall mass?
Broad based towards chest wall = Extra pleural sign
Rib changes
External mass
What rib changes are seen with body wall masses?
Lysis
Proliferation
Fracture
Increased intercostal space
When there is a mass in the lungs and the ribs, where did it originate from?
Ribs
What is a extrapleural sign?
Convex facing the ribs
