Layers of the Plantar foot Flashcards
1
Q
Can you name the layers of the planar foot?
A
- 5 layers
- 1 dorsal layer and 4 plantar layers
2
Q
What is in layer 1?
A
- Dorsal layer
- Extensor digitorium brevis = EDB
- extends toes 2-4
3
Q
What is in the first plantar layer?
A
-
Abductor Hallucis
- medial plantar nerve, abducts great toe
-
Flexor digitorium brevis
- Insert into lateralsurface of middle phalanx
- medial plantar nerve
-
Abductor digiti minimi
- Lateral plantar nerve
4
Q
What is in the second plantar layer?
A
-
Quadratus plantae
- inserts FDL tendon
- helps flex distal phalnges
- lateral planar nerve
-
lumbrical muscles
- Origin- FDL tendon
- inserts-EDL tendon
- Medial and lateral planat nerve
- Flex MTP adn extends IPJ
-
Flexor digitorium longus- FDL
- origin- posterior aspect of tibia
- splits into 4 thru medial intermuscular septum inserts planat sriface base 2-5th distal phalanges
- tibial nerve
-
Flexor hallucis longus- FHL
- inferior 2/3 post tibia
- inserts plantar base of distal phalanx of great toe
- flexes great toe
5
Q
What is in the third plantar layer?
A
-
Flexor hallucis brevis
- origin- cuboid
- inserts- prox phalanx of rgeat toe
- flexes greta toe
- medial planar nerve
-
adductor hallucis
- Oblique 2-4th MT
- Inserts prox phalanx great toe- lateral
- adducts great toe
- lateral plantar nerve
-
flexor digiti minimi brevis
- base of 5th MT
- inserts- prox phalanx small toe
- actions- flexes small toe
- lateral plantar nerve
6
Q
what is in the fourth layer?
A
-
Dorsal interosseous
- from 2 heads from proximal half od sides of adjacent metatarsals
- insert- form a central tendon that inserts on base of 2-4 phalanges
- Abduct MTPJ
- Lateral plantar nerve
-
Plantar interosseus
- origin 3-5 mt
- insert prox phalanges medially
- ADDUCTS toes
- lateral plantar nerve
-
Peroneus longus
- head of fibular
- to plantar postemdial medial cuneiform adn lateral side 1st MT
- superificial peroneal n
- everts foot and plantarflexes ankle
-
Tibialis posterior
- Post sup 2/3 surface fibular and intermuscular septum
- splits into 2 inerts navicular , medial cuneiform and planatrsurface of 2-4MT & 2nd cuneiform
- invertor foot, adducts foot and plantarflexes ankle
- tibial nerve

Q
now describe what is all the plantar layers of the foot?
