Why is Lagos influential?
It is the biggest city in Africa
It has developed infrastructure and is located near a huge lagoon for ports.
It is the financial hub for West Africa and contains 80 percent of it’s industry causing lots of companies to invest in the city
The sections of Lagos
CBD contains the oldest and highest buildings , land is extremely expensive
By 1960 the city had spread north east improving infrastructure
The rural urban fringe has a new industrial zone and a port is being built
Population change in lagos
Historic- city was under British rule
Many ex slaves came to Lagos
1960s-90s- after achieving independence their export of oil led to mass economic development
Government funded lots of construction
Birth rates and death rates were high
Recently-lots of migrants look for a better quality of life. Due to international migration lots of workers from foreign countries operate in Lagos
Both birth and death rates have fallen
Change in land use
Due to the cities expansion and increased prices people are forced to live on the rural urban fringe
More slums are being built though some have been cleared due to the expansion of the city
Opportunities for Lagos
Income is 4x higher than those who work in the informal sector
It is the home to lots of banks and industry providing many jobs
Better healthcare and better education
Challenges for Lagos
Squatter settlements -60 percent of the population still live in slums . Most do not have access to electricity and crime rates are high
Traffic congestion- very little investment to infrastructure. The CBD is on an island with only 3 buildings linked to the rest of Lagos
Limited service - despite increased funding healthcare and education do not provide for everyone
Employment-60 percent of people still work in the informal sector. These people are not regulated nor protected
Water supply-Only about 40percent of the city is connected with the state water supply
What problems does inequality cause ?
There are different priorities . The wealthy want more funding on the CBD whereas the poor simply want better housing
Due to their influence the wealthy can bribe law enforcement allowing these some of the rich people to conduct illegal activities
Lagos is trying to improve
Water supply-2.5 billion dollars invested into water treatment and distribution networks
Waste disposal-local waste management is working to improve rubbish collection
Rail lines - these train lines connect the CBD to the rest of the city reducing traffic congestion
Nongovernmental organisations active in Lagos
CHEIF-aims to develop sustainable healthcare in deprived communities
SEAP-promotes sustainable lively hoods in poorer communities
