4.5 Flashcards
Green house effect
Rays from the sun will hit the earth , the rays will bounce off the surface . Most are released into space however green house gases e.g carbon dioxide. The heat from the rays will remain damaging the atmosphere and permanently heat up the enviorment
Effects of sea level rising
Over the last 100 years sea levels have risen by 12 cm and by 2030 it is excepted to have risen another 15 cm
Maldivian islands only have heights around 1.2 meters and this rapid increase will in danger business , houses and even lives
South east england-111536 houses at risk
London 40412 houses at risk
East midlands-81096
Storm surges
Storm surge is the rise in seawater level caused solely by a storm. Storm tide is the total observed seawater level during a storm, which is the combination of storm surge and normal high tide.
Effects of erosion
When top soil is gone, erosion can cause rills and gullies that make the cultivation of paddocks impossible. The impacts of erosion on cropping lands include: reduced ability of the soil to store water and nutrients. exposure of subsoil , which often has poor physical and chemical properties.
Thermal expansion
When water heats up, it expands. About half of the past century’s rise in sea level is attributable to warmer oceans simply occupying more space. Melting Glaciers and Polar Ice Caps: Large ice formations, like glaciers and the polar ice caps, naturally melt back a bit each summer.
What impacts can glaciers do
Glaciers not only transport material as they move, but they also sculpt and carve away the land beneath them. A glacier’s weight, combined with its gradual movement, can drastically reshape the landscape over hundreds or even thousands of years. The ice erodes the land surface and carries the broken rocks and soil debris far from their original places, resulting in some interesting glacial landforms.
Why are sea levels rising
As the heat increases massive bodies of ice will melt sliding down in a liquid state into the closest body of water . Icebergs do not contribute to this as they already take up the space they would in both states. The whole of Antarctica if melted would increase sea levels by 61.1 metres. It contains 90 percent of the earths water
